A "Cold Car" Schwan's truck operates using a cold plate system, where large, frozen metal plates inside the truck's cargo area absorb heat from the frozen food, keeping it cold throughout the delivery route; these plates are pre-cooled overnight by an electrical unit plugged in at the depot, allowing the truck to maintain cold temperatures without a running refrigeration unit during deliveries, making it essentially "cold" even when the engine is off.
