The hybrid achieves the best mileage as an average of city and highway driving. If you normally drive in a city environment with stop signs and traffic lights, you will get less than 40 mpg for sure. If you tend to drive on stretches of open road or highway with few stops and average around 45-55 mph, you'll get mileage in the mid- to high 40's every time.
